Reading the water

Each time when I visit a place where more people are flyfishing I wonder why most flyfishermen often stay on the same place. In a river, at a lake, or even along the coast it doesn't matter. My question, why don't they try at another place?

By showing some pics and a short explanation of my vision where you can expect fish I hope I can give you some reasons to look somewhere else and fish different than you normally used to. Also expect the unexpected and keep on looking when you are flyfishing. After a while you understand the water better by reading it and you will catch muck more, but most important you will enjoy it!!

Tropical sea / baitfish

1. Big school of baitfish along the coast in the carribbean. There were many big schools of baitfish at the coast and the first time you see this you are really surprised, it is amazing!

2. After a while I saw it, these white spots wasn't just sand, but big, real big tarpons. The tarpons were cruising through the school baitfish and sometimes they go to the surface to hunt for some baitfish. These tarpons are very difficult to catch because there is enough food. They select the weaker ones and simply open theirbig mouth.

3. Sandbottom.

4. The rock/cliff wkere I am standing on.

German / Belgium river

1. Shallow water, fast running. Not really interested, a few casts are enough.

2. Deeper water, interesting place. Sometimes you can find holes in the bank, these are the hotspots.

3. Hotpot fished by mate Gerhard. Under the trees there is a small stroke deep water. He hooked a very big trout at this place, but lost him again. Yes it is difficult fishing because of the roots from the trees.

4. Also an interesting spot because it is deeper and all food floats to this place.. But as you probably realised the start of this pool = 3! And where the start is, are the biggest fish!!
