Dutch Winter Fun.
Nearby Zwolle, the Netherlands / April 2008
During wintertime it is not so easy to flyfish in the Netherlands. Most fish go to depths you cannot reach with the flyrod / line and most fish simply do not eat much because of the cold water. But there are 2 species which are really interested flyfishing this time of the year, pike & roach. I love to do pikeflyfishing, but in the first months of each year I am going to small harbours from the river ijssel and lake ijssel (ijsselmeer) trying to catch real big roaches. And yes they are big fighters with a light rod (#3, or sometimes a #5rod). I think, we dutch flyfishermen are specialist of this kind of flyfishing because I haven't seen it somewhere else. Okok the surrounding is not so nice, but when you sometimes catch over 40 fish a day (big ones!!) I do not complain...
Fish: mostly roach, sometimes perch, ide and bream.
Flies: heavy nimphs, such as goldheadnimphs because most of the time we fish deep (3 meter +).
